  • Safety Supervisory Skills Training Course

    SRSO NEWS

    Dear member,

We forward the following email regarding the above subject from Labour Department for your information.

    Dear Sir/Madam,

    Safety Supervisory Skills Training Course

In light of the industry’s request for devising a training course to meet the basic need of some safety supervisors at work, the Labour Department is pleased to inform you that the course has recently been launched. We would like to invite you to arrange your employees or encourage your workers to enroll in the course.

Safety supervisors play an important role to assist in promoting safety and health of persons employed in a construction site.  At present, there is no the training requirement of safety supervisors prescribed in the Factories and Industrial Undertakings (Safety Officers and Safety Supervisors) Regulations. However, to enable safety supervisors to effectively discharge their duties in accordance with the legislation, employers have the duty to ensure that their safety supervisors are properly trained.

Concerning the request for a basic training course from the industry, the Occupational Safety and Health Council has launched a 22-hour course, namely the Combined Certificate for Safety Supervisory Skills Training Course (details can be found in the attached leaflet) in late 2017.  The course is concise in contents, shorter in duration, delivered in modular basis to allow flexibility, and designed with top-up arrangement for higher qualification. The course is open to persons with site supervision experience. The training course focuses on conducting preliminary risk assessment, understanding and applying safety system of work, conducting safety inspection to assist with monitoring the implementation of safety system of work on site and following up the remedial measures.

In addition, the Construction Industry Council is also preparing its 22-hour training course on Safety Supervisory Skills in Construction Sites. The course will be launched in the second quarter of 2018 tentatively.

The above courses can not only equip safety practitioners with relevant knowledge to help them discharge their duties, but also in the long run, help to foster safety culture among workers and improve the safety performance of the construction industry.  The Labour Department would like to take this opportunity to encourage registered safety officers to arrange safety supervisors working in their companies to enroll in the course.

If you have any questions, please call Mr. YAU Ho-tak (Tel: 3586 2122) or me (Tel: 3153 4723).

    Best regards,
    TSE Bun
